It is with extreme reluctance that I support California's Proposition 209 (Another View, Dec. 29 Herald, Page B4) which seeks
to end affirmative action. Discrimination through quotas and preferential treatment is wrong. Today, no qualified
student may be denied the right to seek a higher education. Those of you who haven't suffered from abuse, discrimination
or hate will never understand the debilitating effects these forces have on a child's ability to learn. Most universities
base admission on standardized test scores. Students who are subject to discrimination have unseen barriers that the majority
of students do not face. Educators agree that test scores are not the only criteria that should be used to determine
who will be admitted to highter education. In golf, people who are not able to compete equally are given a handicap.
Those minority students who have succeeded in reaching the steps of our universities should not be denied their education
in favor of those who have never been subject to hate and discrimination. To some people hate is an end in itself.
Hate is not the light at the end of the tunnel. Hate is the darkness which surrounds the light at the end of the tunnel.
